Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström Delivers Guest Seminar on Genomic and Transcriptomic Approaches to B-Cell Lymphoma Research

Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström, Professor of Clinical Immunology and Head of the Division of Immunology at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, visited the Centre for Oncology and Immunology (COI) on August 4, 2026 to deliver a guest seminar. In her lecture “Genomic and Transcriptomic Studies: Towards Precision Medicine in B Cell Lymphomas”, Prof. Pan-Hammarström shared insights from her team's work on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and follicular lymphoma (FL), two of the most common mature B-cell lymphomas.

Prof. Pan-Hammarström discussed the results of employing genomic and transcriptomic analysis for a more precise understanding of B-cell lymphomas. Drawing on large-scale whole-genome sequencing studies, her team has identified three molecular subtypes of FL, each associated with distinct genetic features, clinical characteristics, and potential cells-of-origin. She also showcased a molecular classification framework for DLBCL comprising seven subtypes, providing new insights into disease heterogeneity and offering promise for patient stratification, particularly within Chinese populations.

The lecture further explored efforts to identify patients who are at high risk of poor prognosis following current first-line treatment. Prof. Pan-Hammarström presented gene expression-based risk models developed for both DLBCL and FL that can be applied alongside molecular and genetic classifications to improve risk assessment. These approaches aim to facilitate earlier and better-informed treatment decisions, including the consideration of immunotherapies for patients less likely to benefit from conventional treatment.

Through her presentation, Prof. Pan-Hammarström demonstrated how the integration of next-generation sequencing technologies with clinical research can ultimately guide more personalized therapeutic strategies for B-cell lymphoma patients.
